Frank Edward Tijou M.S.c [1946-2001]
‘Freeman of The City Of London.’
You got this place like anyone who intended to bypass their anxiety.
You’re sitting here, on the bench, and you know what you have lost there, or rather what has been moved aside with the roar [within the hair, on the face, under the foot]
Skin tones, dialects of blaspheme, amazing codes of clothing]
You choose the left-hand side of the road subsequently on your way home, no matter where you are.
You could take so much home with you
[buildings, laughter, scents],
but why should you,
since all ‘why’s’ are already here with you.
Sarah Louise (Sally) Evans-Orouke [1948-2003]
She’s comfortably leaning her back against the bench.
Her legs stretched out high above
Resting from searching.
The light between her toes
slowly turns the absent hand of the day
with warmth.
Twenty pence coins, luckily found aside
Promised her that she’d have tonight’s dinner
in their company only –
while she’s slowly calculating her loss.
James Briffitt [1977-2000]
‘gaze at the ocean and see the souls
of men reflected in its waters.’
they threw stones, trying to hit each other
but waves [and so did the wind] dissolved
the deepening anger inside of them. Eventually, the woman
leaves irritated. She knows the man
will follow and she hears the water take
his footprints, she sees them, for a moment, in front of her

Phillip William Wakefield [2.11.1952-7.2.2003]
‘A much travelled man who settled in Brighton and loved
to be here by the sea and enjoy the lights of the pier.
He wanted to moor
Filled with roaring curiosity
At the base of the rocky shore
[fragility of the shells thrown outside suspended in tension by the waves].
He embraced the language, which poured his thoughts
Into the distant corners of an unknown land:
I liked to watch him walk up to strangers
And ask them [without any comprehension of it all]
Where any way was.
- Me as well
Tamasina Kells [1908-1995]
‘enjoy the view’
They sat her down among various
gleams, sounds, bringing
particular associations out of their hiding
on her face
she felt them embracing her, reaching
to the salty leaves under the water
-.
The sea withdrew and closed its blue eyelid
